Flame Stop - Frequently Asked Questions

Are there Bromides or Formaldehyde in any of Flame Stop's products?

No, since Flame Stop fire retardant and firestop products were invented, Flame Stop has never manufactured a toxic product. While Formaldehyde might be considered non toxic at very low levels, it remains a known Carcinogen and will not be used by Flame Stop. Fire Retardants that contain toxic chemicals give the industry a bad name.

Can one product fire retard all materials?

No, there are separate products for different materials. For example, would you apply a latex-based paint to fabric?

Can I fire retard the material myself or do I have to be a licensed applicator?

In some cases you have to be licensed in the State of California and New York City. With most applications you can fire retard the material yourself as long as the application instructions are closely followed. First, Flame Stop products are non-toxic and odorless. You can use a garden sprayer or an airless paint sprayer to apply the liquid fire retardants. Since most of these products are penetrants, you don't have to check a mil thickness. Now we come to inspection: When it comes to fabric the only way to truly know whether it was applied correctly is to perform the NFPA 705 field test after the application. This test utilizes a kitchen match, kitchen tongs and a small swatch of the fabric. Other fire retardant products have a florescent additive. The idea behind the additive is that a Black light will show where the material was applied. Flame Stop does not believe in this method of identification because it does not prove how much fire retardant was applied and may give a false sense of fire resistance. Even though the light shows that the FR is applied it may fail the field test.
